Outside Disability
A multi-platform project about the social perception of physically disabled people.
Outside Disability is a multi-platform project that aims to convey the reality of physically disabled people’s experiences, lives and identities outside of their disability.

Through target audience research and discussions with my good friend and project-mate Hendra Raud who is a wheelchair user, we defined two key pain points to address.
1
The negative effects of the social perception of the PDP community, which creates barriers in their professional, romantic, and social lives.
2
The lack of representation of PDP in media large or small.
With myself as lead visual designer and project manager, our team of six peers developed four distinct platforms as a solution.

With myself as lead visual designer and project manager, our team of six peers developed four distinct platforms as a solution.

Our solution:
Platform #1: a social media page focused on showcasing six individual PDP from all walks of life. We highlighted their skills, aspirations, and projects, as well as their experience in the workforce as a disabled person.
This content was designed as a sort of online-CV for these individuals, encouraging viewers to consider working with these individuals in the future and perhaps reflect on their own bias when it comes to PDP as productive members of society.

Platform #2: a website that uncovered pieces of PDP history from ancient times up until today, ending with a personal life story of Helen Bokmann; an outspoken member of the PDP community. It also held an interactive “test your ignorance level” quiz in order to make the topic more engaging.
The website was designed to give our audience a better understanding of how the past has influenced the lives of PDP today. Elements of the visual identity were placed within the website in order to produce a cohesive project for our audience.

Platform #3: a short film that centers around PDP navigating personal relationships and the effects of accessibility in society. The film was based on the real-life experiences we gathered through interviews our team conducted with PDP.
The logo I designed for the project was included in the title card of the film, providing a recognizable icon for our audience to better grasp the project as a whole.

Platform #4: an exhibition titled “Am I Making You Uncomfortable?” showcasing portraits of physically disabled models and some of their close friends, exploring the topic of love and connection as it pertains to PDP.
This exhibition was coupled with a plaque I designed that incorporated our visual style as well as some thought-provoking questions, the goal of which was to create a conversation surrounding disability in society, and create a space where the perspectives of able-bodied people and PDP collide.

The outcome:
Our multi-platform project has successfully reached and resonated with numerous individuals grappling with societal pressures.
Through the establishment of an inclusive online space, we fostered meaningful conversations that revolved around dismantling bias and judgment. In doing so, we not only provided a platform for the voice of PDP but also heightened awareness regarding the challenges they encounter in their everyday lives.
I am so proud to have contributed to a more empathetic and understanding society by making small strides towards dismantling stereotypes and fostering genuine inclusivity.
